I used to make my livin’ on honest cuts. Folks rode in from three counties over for my blade work. Said I was the cleanest hand with a cleaver west of the river. Meat never screamed long under my steel. That was a kindness I could afford back then.

Then the raiders came at dusk… they burned my shop, dragged good people through the mud, an’ laughed while they did it. I didn’t run. I took up the same cleaver I used on the hogs and met ‘em in the streets. By sunrise my apron was soaked through, and the gutters ran red enough to make a preacher lose his faith.

Turns out a butcher's trade don’t change much when the stock’s on two legs. Bone is bone. Muscle parts the same. Fear don’t smell no different. I carved ‘til my arms shook and my ears rang with gunfire and dyin’ men beggin’ for mamas that weren’t never gonna answer.

Now I swing iron for my squad, and I do it without blinkin’. I stand where the fire burns hottest and dare the devil to come closer. I don’t talk ‘bout what I done. Words’re cheap… steel don’t lie.

As for the goats, that’s another matter. I raised ‘em from kids when the world still made a lick of sense. Stubborn creatures, always buttin’ heads, always findin’ trouble, yet they come when I call. They look at me without no fear, like they ain’t see the blood on my hands. Maybe they remember the man who gave ‘em scraps and patched up their cuts. Maybe I keep ‘em close to remind myself I knew how to spare something at one time. A man can butcher the world, but if he can’t keep one small herd safe, he ain’t nothin’ but a monster with a blade.
